The Real Super Bowl Winners!

In 2008 Waste Not was privileged to be selected as the lead agency for the recovery of excess perishable food related to the Super Bowl – demonstrating Waste Not’s growing and distinctive influence within the Phoenix community.

Waste Not worked closely with Jack Groh, director of the NFL's Environmental Program, to coordinate the collection of excess food from as many Super Bowl events as possible. As the lead agency Waste Not synchronized the recovery efforts from multiple events with the assistance from local food banks and other agencies.

Phoenix’s hungry men, women and children were the big winners!  During the 2008 Super Bowl events, Waste Not collected an amazing 93,387 pounds of nutritious, perishable food – topping the 69,000 pounds of food recovered during the 2007 Super Bowl in Miami.

Waste Not drivers worked long, extended hours, making unexpected deliveries of extra food to recipient agency partners on our scheduled routes throughout Maricopa County.

Additional food was gratefully received by many other area agencies that serve and empower thousands of men, women and children every week.

For example, Tolleson Food Bank – one of Waste Not’s regular recipient partner agencies – and a collaborative partner for this event – joined with Waste Not to help collect and distribute 35,202 pounds of wholesome food to hungry, impoverished men, women and children in their own community!
